Once you've decided your glass is a vulnerability, the next question isn't which brand of film to buy — it's which of three fundamentally different approaches actually fits the opening in front of you. Here's what each one physically does, the factors that should decide between them, and the part most companies skip: when replacement is the honest answer even though it isn't something we install.

The Real Decision
Broadly, there are three ways to harden a glass opening, and they are not variations on a theme — they solve different problems, in different ways, with different amounts of disruption.
Retrofit the glass you have. Security film applied to the existing pane, with or without a system that anchors it to the frame.
Add a layer in front of it. An overglaze polycarbonate shield — a separate impact-resistant sheet, mounted in its own frame, installed over the existing window or door.
Replace the glazing. Laminated glass in a new or existing frame, or a full new storefront or door assembly built to a specified rating.
We should say this plainly up front: Armored Glass Solutions installs security window film, overglaze polycarbonate retrofit systems such as our DefenseLite® and BulletShield® line, and door reglazing. We do not do full window or storefront replacement, and we don't fabricate new doors or storefront systems. That means we have no reason to talk you out of replacement when replacement is what an opening actually needs — and we would rather tell you that than sell you a film that won't solve the problem.
What Each One Actually Does
The language around all three tends to blur together in quotes and brochures. It is worth being precise about what each product is doing to the opening.
Security film is a polyester laminate applied to the surface of the glass you already have. What it does, physically, is hold the shattered fragments together after the glass breaks — glass under film still breaks, it just doesn't come apart into loose shards. That is the baseline behavior of film applied to the glass alone.
The detail that gets skipped in a lot of quotes: film held to the glass by adhesive alone, with nothing tying it to the frame, is engineered to resist the pane coming apart into pieces. It is not engineered to resist the whole filmed sheet, still intact, being pushed or pried out of the opening under sustained force. That is why the attachment method — a wet-glaze silicone perimeter bead, or a mechanical anchor profile that clamps the filmed glass into the frame — matters as much as, and arguably more than, the mil thickness of the film itself. An overglaze system doesn't touch the existing glass at all. It is a separate sheet of impact-resistant polycarbonate, mounted in its own frame, installed over the existing window or door opening — a second line of defense standing in front of the first. Because the polycarbonate is doing the structural work rather than the original pane, this is the category where ballistic-rated protection, including systems tested to standards such as UL 752, generally lives. It is a heavier install than film — there is a frame going up, not just a laminate going on — but it doesn't require removing or replacing the original glazing underneath.
Laminated glass is built differently from either of the above: an interlayer is bonded between two lites of glass at the time of manufacture, under heat and pressure, rather than applied afterward. That interlayer is what gives laminated glass its fragment-retention and forced-entry-delay characteristics — engineered in at the factory, not added on site. Getting laminated glass into an opening usually means a new glazing unit, and depending on the frame and the code requirements involved, sometimes a full new window, door, or storefront assembly built to a specified rating.
Replacement is the largest capital and schedule commitment of the three. It is also, for a specific set of situations, the only one that actually solves the problem.
The Checklist
What threat are you actually solving for? Smash-and-grab retail theft, forced-entry delay for an occupied space, graffiti and vandalism on street-facing glass, ballistic protection, and glass retention in a seismic or blast event are five different design problems. A product tested and marketed for one doesn't automatically cover another — ask what standard or test protocol a given system was evaluated against, and against what threat category, before assuming it applies to yours.
What is the existing glass, and what condition is it in? Annealed glass, tempered glass, and dual-pane insulated units all respond differently to film and to retrofit systems, and some of those differences change what is even possible, not just what is advisable. Glass that is already chipped, cracked, or showing seal failure on an insulated unit is a different conversation than sound glass in an aging frame. Can the frame carry an attachment system? A film's frame anchor and an overglaze system's mounting frame both need something structurally sound to bite into. A rotted wood frame, a corroded aluminum frame, or a frame that is already failing changes the answer regardless of what you would otherwise choose.
How much downtime can the space tolerate? An occupied office, an operating retail floor, or a facility that cannot close for a multi-week glazing job weighs retrofit options more heavily. A vacant space mid-renovation has more room to consider replacement.
Is the building historic, or is there a landlord or lease restriction on altering the glazing assembly? Many historic facades and a lot of commercial leases restrict what a tenant can do to the window or storefront assembly itself. Film and overglaze systems generally don't alter the existing glazing — they add to or coat what is there — which is often the only path available in those situations.
Is this grant money with a scope already written into the award? If you are working from a federal or state security grant, the award may already specify a scope, a product category, or a spending deadline. That scope should drive the product conversation, not the other way around.
When Replacement Wins
There are real situations where film or an overglaze shield is the wrong recommendation, and saying so is the whole point of this guide.
Failed or structurally compromised frames. If the frame itself is rotted, corroded beyond repair, or no longer square in the opening, no attachment system — film or polycarbonate — has anything sound to anchor to. The frame has to be addressed before any retrofit product can do its job, and often that means the whole assembly is being replaced anyway.
Glass that is already broken, or an insulated unit that has failed. Film and overglaze systems are applied to sound glass. A cracked lite, a shattered pane, or a dual-pane unit with failed seals and fogging between the panes isn't a candidate for a retrofit product — the glass itself needs to come out.
Ballistic requirements a film system can't meet. Film alone is not a ballistic product. If the actual requirement is a bullet-resistant rating, that requirement is met with laminated or polycarbonate-based glazing engineered and tested for it — which may mean an overglaze system, or may mean a rated replacement assembly, depending on the opening.
Code-driven requirements for a rated assembly. Certain occupancies, jurisdictions, and grant scopes call for a specific rated glazing assembly rather than a retrofit to existing glass. When the code path requires the assembly itself to carry a rating — not just a film applied to it — replacement is the compliant answer.
In every one of those situations we will say so directly, even though it means referring the replacement work elsewhere.
When a Retrofit Wins
Occupied buildings that can't go dark for weeks. Film installs and overglaze mounts are measured in hours to days per opening, not the weeks a full storefront replacement can take. For a building that has to stay open, that difference is often decisive on its own.
Tenant spaces where the lease won't let you touch the assembly. A tenant who doesn't own the building frequently can't replace the landlord's glazing at all — but adding film or an overglaze shield in front of it is usually within what the lease allows, because the original assembly isn't being altered.
Budgets that have to cover a lot of openings. A building with dozens of windows and door lites generally gets more real security coverage per dollar by hardening every opening with film or a shield system than by replacing a handful of them with laminated glass and leaving the rest untouched.
Historic facades. Preserving the original storefront or window profile while still hardening the glass is often only possible with a retrofit approach — replacement isn't on the table when the assembly itself is part of what is being protected.
Speed. When the priority is getting protection in place quickly — after an incident, ahead of a known risk window, or against a grant deadline — retrofit approaches go in faster than a fabrication-and-installation cycle for new glazing.
The Combination Approach
This is more common in practice than either pure option, and it is worth naming so you don't feel you have to pick one product for the whole building.
A retail storefront might get an overglaze polycarbonate system on the ground-floor entry doors where forced-entry delay matters most, security film with a full frame-anchor system on the display windows flanking it, and standard security film on upper-floor office glass with no ballistic requirement at all. A nonprofit facility working from a grant scope might harden the majority of its window openings with film to stay within a fixed award, while a handful of clerestory or already-damaged units get flagged for eventual replacement outside the grant.
Neither of those is a compromise. It is matching the product to the opening instead of applying one blanket answer to a whole building.
What A Real Assessment Looks Like
None of the factors above can be weighed accurately over the phone. A real assessment means someone physically at the building, measuring the openings, identifying the glass type and the frame condition opening by opening, and asking what you are actually trying to protect against before recommending anything. That produces a written scope — not a verbal estimate — that says plainly which product goes where, why, and what it has been tested to.
Get that in writing before you commit to anything, whether you are working with us or with anyone else. And ask directly: is this opening a film candidate, an overglaze candidate, or does it need to be replaced? A straight answer to that question, opening by opening, is the real deliverable of a good assessment — more than any single product name.

Yes. Film is applied to sound, intact glass and depends on a solid frame to anchor to. If the glass is already broken, the frame is failing, or the actual requirement is a ballistic rating that film alone cannot meet, film isn't the right recommendation — and a straight assessment should say so rather than trying to make it fit.
Yes, and it's common. Different openings in the same building often carry different threats and different constraints, so it's normal to see film on some windows, an overglaze polycarbonate system on the most exposed doors, and replacement scheduled for a unit that has already failed — all in the same scope.
Film alone is not a ballistic product. Ballistic protection, including systems tested to standards such as UL 752, generally comes from overglaze polycarbonate systems or laminated and rated glazing engineered and tested specifically for that purpose.
A frame in sound structural condition — not rotted, not corroded through, still square in the opening — is generally a candidate for either a film attachment system or an overglaze mounting frame. A frame that is already failing needs to be addressed on its own before any retrofit product can do its job, and that assessment should happen in person, not from photos.
It should, if it is being honest with you. A company that only offers one category of product has a built-in incentive to make everything look like a fit for that product. Ask directly what they would recommend if their own product were not an option — the answer tells you a lot about whether you are getting a real assessment or a sales pitch.
