How to Compare Security Window Films: The 6 Numbers That Matter

Every security film manufacturer publishes a data sheet, and every data sheet looks impressive. The trouble is knowing which numbers actually predict how the film performs on your glass, and which ones are just marketing filler. Here's what to read, in plain English, before you sign a quote.

We're brand-agnostic on purpose — we've worked with more than 20 window film manufacturers, and no single brand is the right answer for every job. What matters isn't the logo on the roll, it's whether the film's published specs match the threat you're actually worried about and the glass you actually have. That comes down to six numbers you can ask any installer for. If they can't answer, ask someone else.

Number 1

Film thickness, measured in mils.

Thickness is the first number everyone asks about, and the most misunderstood. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. Residential security film commonly runs in the 4 to 8 mil range, mid-tier security and forced-entry-resistant applications often move into 8 to 12 mil, heavier storefront and blast-mitigation-oriented film can run 12 to 14 mil, and multi-ply retrofit systems like the ones behind our DefenseLite®/BulletShield® retrofit glazing stack well beyond that. (Those mil ranges are generic industry categories, not a promise about any specific product.)

Thicker isn't automatically better

A 12 mil film on glass that can't support the added load, or with no attachment system, can underperform a properly anchored 8 mil film. Thickness is one input, not the whole answer.

It's a glass-and-threat question

The right mil rating depends on what's already there — annealed, tempered, or laminated glass all respond differently — and what you're trying to resist: smash-and-grab, prying, or repeated forced entry.

Ask for the match, not the max

A manufacturer-tested installer can tell you which mil range is tested for your glass type and opening, per the manufacturer's published data sheet, instead of just upselling the thickest roll in stock.

Number 2

Tensile strength and break strength.

Every manufacturer's data sheet reports a tensile strength figure, usually in pounds per square inch or a similar unit. This is the resistance-to-tearing number — it tells you how much pulling force the film's polyester layer can take before it starts to fail. It's tested on the raw film in a lab, not on installed glass, so treat it as one data point among several rather than a standalone score.

A higher tensile number is generally a good sign, but it only tells you about the film itself — not about how it's bonded to the glass or anchored to the frame, which is where a lot of real-world performance is actually decided (see Number 4 below).

Number 3

Elongation at break and puncture resistance.

This is the "does it stretch and hold, or does it tear" number. Elongation at break, reported as a percentage on the manufacturer's data sheet, measures how far the film can stretch before it snaps. Puncture resistance measures how much force it takes to push something through it. Together they describe what happens in the instant after the glass has already broken — whether the film flexes and absorbs the impact or gives way immediately.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Glass breaking is not the failure point security film is designed around — glass always breaks. Elongation is about what the film does in the fractions of a second after that.

It varies by film family

Different polymer formulations trade off elongation against clarity, thickness, and cost. That's part of why the right film depends on the job, not just the brand.

Ask to see the number

A manufacturer-tested product should have a published elongation figure. If a quote can't point to one, that's worth asking about directly.

Number 4

The attachment system — the spec most quotes skip.

This is the one we'd put first if we were only allowed to name one. Film held to the glass by adhesive alone, with no attachment to the frame, is engineered to resist the pane shattering into pieces. It is not engineered to resist the whole pane, still in one piece, popping out of the frame under repeated force. A wet-glaze silicone perimeter bead or a mechanical anchor profile ties the film — and the glass behind it — to the frame itself. That connection is the single most common reason a "security" film install underperforms in the field: everyone remembers to spec the film and forgets to spec the attachment.

Wet-glaze silicone

A structural silicone bead applied around the perimeter, bonding the filmed glass to the frame. Common on both retrofit and new security glazing where a clean, engineered edge matters.

Mechanical anchor profile

A batten or track system that physically clamps the filmed glass into the frame. Often used where a mechanical, inspectable connection is preferred over an adhesive bead.

Daylight-applied only

Film applied edge-to-edge on the glass with no frame attachment. It still improves fragment retention over bare glass, but it is a different — and lesser — category of protection than an anchored system, and any quote should say plainly which one you're getting.

Number 5

Adhesive class and warranty term.

The adhesive is what actually bonds the film to the glass day to day, long after installation — it's a separate spec from the film's tensile strength or thickness, and manufacturers rate it separately. Ask three things: how many years the warranty runs, what's actually covered (film only, or film plus labor to replace it), and whether it gets registered directly in your name at installation, or just sits with the installer.

Number 6

What testing does the manufacturer cite — and against what standard?

Manufacturers test their film against published categories: impact resistance, forced-entry resistance, and in some applications, blast mitigation or windborne-debris standards. We're intentionally not going to hand you a list of specific standard numbers or pass levels here, because the right one depends on your opening, your jurisdiction, and your goal — a hurricane-prone coastal building and a storefront worried about smash-and-grab are not shopping for the same tested assembly, even if both are called "security film."

The right question for any quote: "Which standard was this tested to, and which specific glass-film-attachment assembly does my job match?" A manufacturer-tested product should have a clear answer, per the manufacturer's published data sheet — not a vague reference to "military grade" or similar marketing language.

Honest Talk

The number that isn't on the data sheet.

Every spec above describes the film. None of them describe the installation, and installation is where a lot of real-world performance is won or lost.

Installation quality

Air bubbles, edge lift, and rushed application all shorten the effective life of even a well-specified film. Prep and technique matter as much as the roll itself.

Glass condition

Chipped edges, old seals, and existing stress cracks change how any film performs — and sometimes mean the glass needs attention before film is the right answer at all.

Frame type and edge gaps

Aluminum, vinyl, and wood frames all anchor differently, and a wide or uneven edge gap can undermine an otherwise well-chosen attachment system.

This is also where brand-agnostic matters: we've used enough different films and attachment systems to know that the "best" film on paper isn't automatically the best fit once we're standing in front of your actual glass and frame.

Comparing security films FAQ.

Is thicker film always the safer choice?

Not automatically. Thickness matters, but it works together with the attachment system, the adhesive, and the glass it's going on. A thinner film that's properly anchored to the frame can outperform a thicker film applied without one. That's why we look at the whole spec sheet, not just the mil number.

Do I need a mechanical anchor, or is silicone enough?

Both are legitimate attachment methods — the right one depends on the frame material, the opening, and what the manufacturer's tested assembly calls for. What matters is that there's an attachment system at all, rather than film applied to the glass alone.

Can I compare films just by looking at price per square foot?

Price alone won't tell you whether two quotes are actually specifying the same thing. Two bids at very different prices might reflect different mil ratings, different attachment systems, or different warranty terms — ask for the data sheet behind the number.
