A practice wants its glass-walled rooms to feel open, bright, and connected to the rest of the office most of the day. Then a patient sits down for a procedure, a consult, or an exam, and that same glass needs to go private — without anyone walking down the hall and repositioning a blind.
The traditional fixes each force a permanent choice. Frosted or etched glass is private around the clock, which also means the room reads as closed and dim between patients, all day, every day. Blinds or curtains solve it in theory, but they come with cords, slats, and fabric to keep clean in a space that has to stay clinical — a real maintenance burden, not a cosmetic one. Neither option lets the room be two different things depending on what's happening in it right now.
How It Actually Works
Switchable film — PDLC, or polymer-dispersed liquid crystal — is a laminate applied to existing glass and wired to a low-voltage supply. It doesn't tint or filter light; it scatters or aligns it.
With the power off, the liquid-crystal particles inside the film sit in random orientation and scatter light passing through, which reads as an even, opaque white — similar in effect to heavy frost, but reversible. Apply voltage, and the particles align, and the glass goes clear again. There's no hardware on the glass itself to dust or snag, which matters in a space that gets wiped down constantly.
From our Pasadena orthodontist install, using Gauzy's published specification sheets for the film installed on that job: switching speed under 0.1 seconds, haze around 2.5% in the clear state, roughly 3 watts per square meter of power draw, UV block above 99%, and a 350-micron laminate applied directly to the existing glass with no reglazing required. What The 21-Window Job Taught Us
We installed Gauzy switchable smart film across all 21 windows of a Pasadena orthodontic practice — the full case study is linked below. The scope is what makes the lesson worth repeating: this is not a roll you trim on the glass the way you'd trim solar or security film.
Each panel of PDLC smart film is custom-cut to its opening and carries electrical connections that have to land correctly and get wired back to switching controls. On the Pasadena job, that meant 21 windows individually measured, 21 panels custom-cut to those measurements, and every one wired — with no ability to trim a panel down or stretch it to cover a measurement miss the way you sometimes can with ordinary film. A sizing error on smart film isn't a fixable inconvenience on the glass; it's a panel that has to be remade.
That's the real takeaway for any practice considering it: whoever measures and installs the film matters as much as whose film it is. A film brand's spec sheet tells you what the product can do. It doesn't tell you whether the person cutting and wiring 21 individual panels got every opening right.
Where It Fits — And Where It Doesn't

An opening that's private or open all the time doesn't need a switch. A restroom window or a permanently screened side light is privacy-always glass — plain frost or decorative film does the same job at a lower cost and without the wiring. Smart film also needs power run to the opening, which is a real consideration on a retrofit, not just a spec-sheet line item.
Before You Sign a Quote
Where does the low-voltage supply come from for each opening, and how will you switch it — wall switch, remote, or building automation? If the answer is vague, the wiring plan probably is too.
Is every opening measured and cut individually, or is the quote assuming a few standard sizes? On a multi-window job, that's the difference between a fit and a redo.
Ask specifically how the electrical connections at the panel edge are handled and hidden. This is where sloppy installs show up first.
Get the actual published numbers — switching speed, haze, power draw — for the specific product line quoted, not a general claim about "smart film" as a category.
With custom-cut panels and wiring on every opening, ask who is physically doing the measuring and cutting, and how much experience they have with PDLC specifically versus standard window film.

Switchable film gives a practice a genuinely useful option for rooms that need to change character during the day, and the manufacturer's published specs — switching speed, clarity, power draw — are worth reading before you buy. It's a privacy and comfort feature, not a compliance product, and it isn't the right call for every opening in a building.
